Angels are everywhere during the holiday season and you'd have to be a real Scrooge to not be uplifted by the sight or mention of them. We see them on cards, posters and even on billboards. We spot them nestled in holiday décor and hear them celebrated in Christmas carols. So completely has the idea of angels permeated our culture that we naturally refer to them in our vernacular: “She's an angel. What an angel! Be an angel! ” we often say.

A belief in angels appears as far back as ancient artwork from 2250 B.C. Islam believes that everyone has two angels – one that records a person's good deeds and one that records the bad deeds. The Torah explains that Jews believe there are four Archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel. In the Bible, only two are mentioned: Michael and Gabriel. Many Christians as well as people of other faiths believe that a Guardian Angel watches over them. And according to a poll on Time Magazine, 68% of Americans believe in Angels.

I will confess that whenever I am flying and the plane is zooming down the runway about to take off, I imagine Archangel Michael underneath us, helping to lift the plane into the sky. Michael, pictured below, is considered to be the supreme helper and protector. People believe that his spirit can be a bodyguard and that he works with a Sword of Light. It is said that his presence can transform fear into peace.Archangel Michael

Archangel Gabriel, who is female, was the angel who told Mary about the imminent birth of her son, Jesus. Gabriel is now celebrated as a messenger and an angel of peace and strength. She can be called upon to release procrastination and push people into action. She is also assists artists in their work and acts as a guide to hopeful parents who are in the process of adoption or are awaiting the birth of a child. It is clear in the kindness of her eyes below, that she is a benevolent spirit.

Archangel Raphael (below) is known as the Great Healer. His presence is thought to energetically promote healing as well as send a clear path of assistance for people who are ill. He is celebrated for his sense of humor and for his love of the Earth. It is said that he works not only to heal people, but the whole planet as well.

Archangel Uriel (pictured at the top of the page) rules the realms of thought and is humanity's link to the spiritual realm. He is the Archangel of Salvation and is believed to teach us how to heal difficult aspects of our lives – the disappointments, burdens and challenges. He works with a flaming sword to purify mental and emotional understanding for people who have reached out to him.

Whatever your own beliefs, be an angel to the people you love this holiday season. Be part of the great conspiracy of love that spreads cheer, shops mindfully and showers the planet with joy. From all of us at, Happy Holidays!
